South Africa's World Cup, as seen from New York City

tc’s mundial mix

Not music specifically about football itself, which is rarely the best music. And certainly not music by footballers, of which there’s an entire awful catalogue. What I’m after is music that has the right rhythm, music that evokes the passes, the feints, the goals, the levitation that is football. I’d like to add something hot from Mexico to the list; Algeria, too. Suggestions?

1. Mas Que Nada—Bab and Rolando 808 (Brazil)
2. Drogbacité—Shanaka Yakusa (Côte d’Ivoire)
3. I’m Going On—Gnarls Barkley (USA)
4. Roforofo fight—Fela Kuti (Nigeria)
5. Vulindlela—Brenda Fassie (South Africa)
6. Senegal Champions of Africa—The Black Seeds (New Zealand)
7. Wavin’ Flag—K’Naan (Somalia/Canada)
8. Maracatu Atômico—Gilberto Gil (Brazil)
9. O Filósofo—Jorge Ben (Brazil)
10. Kita Kita—Gasper Lawal (Nigeria)
11. Umqombothi—Yvonne Chaka Chaka (South Africa)
